Mindfulness While Working

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

I have a high tempo job, where I spend most of my day in front of the computer. I am typically handling a number of deliverables during the day, as well as answering emails, phone calls, etc.

I do a pretty good job of being present when I get up to go to the kitchen or the restroom. I, however, feel like the rest of the day when I am actually working is spent engrossed in that work without much attention being given to the physical world around me (unless someone comes over to talk to me). From mindfulness perspective, should I be implementing some pauses to reflect or is the full concentration at task in front of me acceptable?

Thanks,

Og

Some pauses throughout the day are certainly not going to harm you. Just check in with yourself. How are you feeling in that given momen?. Your body will give you clues as to when your stress levels are too high and any tension you are holding in your body. If any particular day is taking too much out of you, you can take some restorative steps like a nice mindful bath or getting an early night.

If you've got bills to pay, then you need to make sure that you are performing at work; mindfulness should help you with that. Over time you should find that the lines between formal meditation and life itself become increasingly blurred. Mindfulness should also give you a better view of the big picture of your life.

How long have you been practising for?

Thanks Gareth.

I've been at it on and off for about a year. Working through Mark Williams' book now, so I am more focused on mindfulness than I have been in the past.

Try and get some consistency to your practice; it will help. Every day for 10 miutes is better than occasionally for 30 minutes.
