Self-protection? Selfishness?

Post here if you have been practising for a while, and you are starting to get your head around what this is all about. Also post here if you are a long-term practitioner with something to say about the practice.

I felt a little shallow, avoiding war, crime, poverty, etc., and choosing one about music. Selfish? Self-preservation? It's where I am right now. Will I change again?

Hi There,

I've never tried posting a quote so don't know if it will turn out or not, but here goes , I was interested by what you wrote because I find since practicing mindfulness that I feel differently myself and my likes have changed alot, like the tv programmes I watch, am watching much less tv, am developing new interests, dabbling at painting and surprising for me am developing a liking for classical music! Never thought that possibel, but through mindfulness when I actually "listen" properly to the music it is beautiful. I have always loved nature but find the senses enhanced through mindfulness and am in awe at the beauty of trees, leaves, flowers, clouds the sky, weather, the list is endless.
I dont think your being selfish, you are mindful of your choices, don't be harsh on yourself, just be "you".

Beautifully put, Jackie.
I've pretty much given up TV now and I retired from Facebook some time ago. I now drink a small fraction of the booze I used to quaff in pre-mindful days. I read a lot more. And my taste in music has expanded no end - I now listen to a lot more classical and I'm getting into ambient music (Brian Eno especially) in a big way. I still play a lot of ska as that's always guaranteed to cheer my spaniel up. He's a major Prince Buster fan.

thanks Jon,
yes, its funny how our likes change through mindfulness. I am at present on week 6 of the 8 week course by Danny Penman & Mark williams and am handling it quite well. I also meditate on my own in the mornings and am able to stretch it out a little bit longer than I used to. Life is good. Have a great weekend!

Life IS good.
Natalie Merchant wrote a terrific song with that very title.

Wow, so I'm not mental then  Only difference is that I don't listen to Brian Eno

Eno is the master; it's among my favourite meditation music. You must listen to 14:31 by Global Communication. Best meditation tune ever.

Funnily enough I purchased 14.31 just last week and I'm loving it.

The ticking clock is like a metronome. It keeps you hooked right into the track. I have a whole host of ambient recommendations if you are ever interested.
