Just One Thing - change your brain by the way you use it

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

This is wonderful, we now have lots of people joining in this; it should be a really worthwhile experiment.

I'm a little bit concerned about this thread becoming too long and unwieldy. What do you think to starting a new thread each week and sticking the week's thread to the top of this section, for easy access?

We could then maybe have a reflections topic where people talk more generally about any changes they are noticing.

Also, Rick Hanson is on Twitter (@drrhanson) if people want to petition him to get involved in this topic.

I'm not sure Gareth. The Elephant thread got very long indeed but didn't seem to cause any confusion. I wonder if breaking up the discussion too much might not be off putting.

I'll be joining in on 2nd January.
But right now I'm off out into the night to change my brain by using copious amounts of fine wine.
Happy New Year everybody!
Here's to a great 2014 for you all.
Cheers! (hic),

I personally would vote for a thread per chapter. It would make it quicker to go back and revisit particular topics throughout the year, and I think it would make it easier for folks joining in as the year goes by too.

Happy New Year everyone.

I think that's a great idea!

Splitting the thread into "genres" (specific comments VS reflections) seems difficult - I think Betty's suggestion would be a good compromise...

Just my 2 cents! ;)
I've been practising formal meditation for 15 years.

I would have thought a new thread per chapter would help keep things manageable and easily referenced, with perhaps one further general thread for people to comment on their overall experience of working through the book.

Happy New Year

I have no strong feelings on this, other than 'keep it simple'.

Perhaps we should see how it goes for a week or too and then see whether any of the suggestions looks desirable.

Happy New Year everyone

Here is the little video that goes with week 1.
I am finding the cue sheets a very helpful prompt as is having the physical book rather than the kindle version. I have them all in a folder so it is always to hand to refer too.
I am using this week to finish up my elephant training and familiarise myself with this new project before starting 'properly' on Sunday and feeling very optimistic about the year ahead.

Hi All,
I am new here and new to mindfulness. I purchased this book about a month ago. And was very excited to see a link to this study/board on twitter. Not sure how this goes. But, I will try to jump in when everyone else gets started. I think this is going to be awesome!!!!

I like Betty's idea of using the different chapter titles, perhaps prefaced with "JOT"...

Incidentally, Hanson has a "Buddha's Brain" app, which has - what seems to be - some complementary topics, including some audio (the first is "Be on Your Own Side").

In Chapter One, Be Good to Yourself, the 'How' of looking at, or bringing to mind, a picture of myself as a young child is something I've been doing myself for a short while. I hold the image in my mind and the feeling of love & compassion in my body, and I find it's really effective for me (long history of low self-esteem!).

Looking forward to the practise!

Vicky
