Is it wrong to distract yourself?

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

Jon, I am working on week 6 of the Mark Williams /Danny Penman course and it does say to stay with whatever negative thoughts for awhile to see what affects it has on your body and then go back to the breath.

Yes, I take JKZ's meaning to be: recognise those thoughts, explore their texture, notice how the thoughts affect the body - maybe tension round the neck or lower back. Rather than be pulled away by the thoughts.
Does that make any sense?
