Counting

In the few books I've read, it has tended to direct the beginner to count breaths; in 1, out 2, in 3, out 4, etc until 10, and then start again at one.
I have done this for a while but something in me is much more in tune with the idea of counting on the out breath, ie in, out 1, in, out 2 and so on.
Does it matter?
I guess people here might say it doesn't matter since some people don't anchor on the breath at all, but then why is the former way of counting so prevelant?
Also, should the counting continue for the duration of the formal practice, or only when needing to ground myself after getting lost in thought?
Would appreciate your views
