In the few books I've read, it has tended to direct the beginner to count breaths; in 1, out 2, in 3, out 4, etc until 10, and then start again at one.
I have done this for a while but something in me is much more in tune with the idea of counting on the out breath, ie in, out 1, in, out 2 and so on.
Does it matter?
I guess people here might say it doesn't matter since some people don't anchor on the breath at all, but then why is the former way of counting so prevelant?
Also, should the counting continue for the duration of the formal practice, or only when needing to ground myself after getting lost in thought?
Would appreciate your views

Hi monkeymind.
I've never gone in for counting so I'm perhaps not the best person to offer a response.
However, I'd say stick to what you feel comfortable with.
My guess would be that the former method of counting is purely down to tradition in meditative circles. See also: the positioning of hands when meditating etc.
As for counting outside of formal practice, again, stick with it if you find it helpful.
Cheers,
Jon

Thanks for your input.
Just to clarify, I was unsure whether people that count tend to count for the duration of their formal practice, or just occasionally as needed therein. I wasn't thinking of counting outside of formal practice.
(Although I do sometimes count steps when walking, but maybe that counts as semi-formal)

Hi monkeymind,
You pose the question: "Does it matter?"
What matters is what works for you. What works for others, and what the books say, can be considered suggestions, tips or helpful hints; but you can decide what works best for you.

It's a long time ago now, but breath counting was a useful tool for me for a while.
Experiment, find a way that's right for you.
