I understand the matter is settled here and no questions left unanswered.
However, I think 'why pay attention' question has a rich answer, at least in my experience.
First off, you can live your life paying attention, or not bothering paying attention.
Also paying attention is same as being in the present moment, as you cannot pay attention anywhere other than the present moment.
So it is your choice, you can live life being present, or as sometimes put waking up to be present, or you can live lost in thoughts or emotional reactivity. Thoughts about all different types of things.
When you are lost in thoughts what happens to you is dictated by your thoughts or reactivity. When you pay attention, you may have some more influence over what happens to you.
More importantly, by refining your skill to pay attention, you can come to dis-identify with your thoughts and emotions and not get so much swept away by them.
