Information about the study ‘Mindfulness and Leadership’

This study is part of a research project at Maastricht University on the topic of leaders’ mindfulness.

What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness describes a state of consciousness in which individuals attend to ongoing events and experiences in a receptive and non-judgmental way. Mindfulness trainings which originate in Buddhism and meditation practice have been frequently conducted in clinical settings with patients but have recently started to also garner attention in organizational contexts.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for individuals in leadership positions, who are interested in the topic of mindfulness or would like to support research on leadership in general. The training spans 30 days and includes 5-10 min exercises each day which can be followed on the computer or on the smartphone via an app. In addition, it is important for this study that leaders find one direct employee of their choice who is willing to voluntarily answer a few questions in the context of this study as well. Please note that voluntariness of participation is a prerequisite for participation of your subordinate. The goal of the study is to find out more about how regular mindfulness practices impact leadership behavior.

As this study is conducted in several countries the mindfulness training and the questionnaires are in English – therefore, a decent level of English is mandatory for participation.

Important: This study has been approved by the ethical commission of the Faculty for Psychology and Neuroscience of Maastricht University (Master_188_03_02_2018). Data collection is completely confidential and data analysis and reporting will be fully anonymous. All data will only be used for this research project and you are free to withdraw from this study at any time.

How is the study built up?
The study will last one month in total and is structured in the following way:
1) In the first step and prior to the 30-day mindfulness training, we will ask leaders and followers to fill in a short general questionnaire including demographic questions. This questionnaire will not take more than 10 minutes of your time.
2) In a second step and after leaders have received the instructions regarding the intervention, leaders and followers will be contacted once a week (every Friday, around 13h) for 5 weeks in total to fill in a 5-min questionnaire about the experiences at work during that week.

What’s in it for you?
You get the chance to participate in a usually fee-based 30-day mindfulness training. In addition, this project may be a chance to get to know you better and to better be able to judge your own leadership behavior. The employee selected by you as a leader will receive free access to the mindfulness training after you have completed the training.

Glad to see that mindfulness is gathering interest from researchers and from the "official" science community in general! Will you keep us informed of how it goes afterwards?
