I have been using an android app called Insight Timer Meditation, which can be found here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotlightsix.zentimer
Sorry for the long link, I couldn't work out how to change a word into the link.
Anyway it is a simple timer that lets you set up a duration you would like to meditate for, choose the type of bell you would like to signal the end of your meditation time and also gives you the option to signal time passing using bells too. I really like the fact it tells you how many people are meditating around the world using the app at the same time as you.
Another android app I really like is the Mindfulness Bell which can be found here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.mindbell
The bell can be set to ring out as many times during the day as you like and you can set the to and from times so no chance of being woken up and reminded to be mindful at 3am... well unless that's what you want!

I have never even tried anything like this. I always just set the alarm on my phone for thirty minutes; it lets me choose the song to finish the timer. I quite often have music on during my meditations anyway.

I have a timer set on my phone too.
I think I like the app because it tells me how many other people are meditating too and the option to say hi to them.
The mindfulness bell is a good reminder at the moment because I am struggling to keep up daily practice and also to be mindful at times other than when I am doing formal practice.
I keep meaning to try meditating with music but need to find something that enhances not distracts. Do you have any recommendations?

Having only recently got a smartphone that works properly with apps (my previous Windows version didn't), I've been exploring android apps too.
I agree the timers are good but I also like to use guided meditations sometimes too. The style and voice is a very individual thing but I quite like the ones I've tried from Meditation Oasis (based in Oz I think). I find the lady's voice easy on the ears and her comments useful and not intrusive.
I've downloaded Relax & Rest from Cigna, Take a Break and Walking. Some are free others have a small charge.
I've also tries Mindfulness Trainer from another source. This has moving, sitting and bodyscan meditations.

It's very exciting. I've just finished building this app http://XdaysY.com
ONE MINDFUL MOMENT? With my XdaysY app you can challenge yourself to look differently at your life and spot ONE MINDFUL MOMENT each day for a week. It is a bit of a diary, a bit of a personal challenge.
XdaysY can stand for 7daysGreatful, or 30daysFriendship etc.. but the point is that you'd look for and notice the lovely details in life. That's Mindfulness!
Please tell me what you all think!
Download: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stormideas.xdaysy
Please share it with your friends - we can redefine the phone's purpose: no more for distractions, but for mindfulness!
