Changes Made To You By Mindfulness

Post here if you have been practising for a while, and you are starting to get your head around what this is all about. Also post here if you are a long-term practitioner with something to say about the practice.

I noticed today that I have accepted a situation that would previously have caused me hours, perhaps days of grief, by pausing to be mindful. My Borderline Personality Disorder diagnosis (which I also had to learn to accept) means that my emotional responses to my thought, situations and things people say can be disproportionate Mindfulness gives me the space to get a clearer perspective. ;)

Weather and the sky also for me. Feeling the cold on my face, the sensation of it. I would say I was generally more aware of the "hum of life" as Alan Watts calls it. :)

I also 'catch myself' now when I get upset or frustrated about things or at people. I slow down, I think...sometimes after I have already got a little upset but, more and more, I catch it earlier and earlier. My compassion for people has improved dramatically both in a very personal sense (relationship with my wife) and in a general sense (humanity in general, I am much less cynical!).

Hi bitterbalden, I like you find myself feeling more compassionate towards others, and am not so quick to "bite back" when annoying people try to tease etc, I have always been a bit sensitive and people take advantage of that but through mindfulness it has helped me deal with that and see it for what it is, just because someone says something doesn't mean its true mainly they say it to get a reaction and when they don't get that they get bored and leave you alone.

I've got all the usual benefits like you'd expect from mindfulness but the two that i wasn't expecting:

* I don't feel the need to be constantly entertained by bright colours & loud explosions in the latest American crime drama on TV - that's a good thing

* I'm appreciating more subtle things now - I've just bought a Norah Jones CD for crying out loud, rock music's usually more my thing - I'm not sure if this one's good or bad!!

+ of course becoming aware of the constant sounds, smells, sensations etc.... that were always there but were somehow hidden from view

Yes - I know what you mean. Normal life can be enough - household tensions and arguments, office issues, and general accidents and misfortunes are explosions enough for me. Why choose to bring in more? :)
