Introductory Course

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

Next weekend, I'm going on a three-day residential mindfulness course. The course was arranged by my trade union, but will be delivered by an external provider.

I was asked to privide a phone number, so that the tutors could ring me, to ensure that I was suitable for the course. One of them rang me and asked whether I had any experience of mindfulness, so I told her I was working from a book and belonged to an online forum. She also asked if I'd ever been in professional psychiatric care. Is this standard practice for a mindfulness course?

I know that similar questions are asked on other residential meditation courses like Vipassana.

you usually have assessment before going on a mindfulness course (ours are nhs). if the scores are too high you may be asked to wait.
if you suffer from depression then you should really be between bouts of depression to go on the course.
it really isn't something you want to do if you're really depressed.
