Striving

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

I think I see both sides of the argument and I'm pleased we have heard from so many people on it.
I must say that I broadly agree with everyone.
Having the habit of striving is ultimately unhelpful in the long run and its with only the best of intentions that our more experienced friends warn us of the risks.
But the way I see it is that if those little stars on the app help to motivate people to develop a habit of sitting everyday then they'll more than pay for themselves in the long run.
I think people will strive for these little rewards until such a time that they don't need them anymore.
I'm very happy, for instance, that people like our Fee can reach a level at which they realise they no longer want the gimmick of the stars to drive their meditation practice, but until that moment arrives I think they're a useful tool. Especially for beginners.

Yep, that is it exactly for me :) The stars helped build the practice to the point I suddenly realised I didn't need the stars.

I also agree with Jon that concerns and confusion around things like striving can make beginners anxious that they don't understand it, are doing it wrong and should give up. I hope that by sharing experiences here we are providing a really varied and comprehensive resource for everyone practicing mindfulness.
