Sitting with intense tension

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

Interesting..i've read about the body scan before. Do you possibly have guide you have found helpful which you can share with me :)

this is another link that may be useful http://www.youtube.com/user/MindfulnessLancs?ob=0&feature=results_main this links to our longer body scan , it's around 40 minutes. there are a couple of visualizations in there as well, not strictly mbct but a lot of people really like them.

a lot of my meditation is on my own but it is a different experience being guided. for me there's a sort of connection with the person guiding or with the person i'm guiding, more so in a larger group, that for me really does 'feel' a different experience.

Many people that come to mindfulness are coming to it with some difficulty in their life, like anxiety and depression. It is important that these people get solid mindfulness advice, preferably from teacher. Not that any of the advice given so far is wrong, far from it. I am just conscious that this forum is open and anyone can post here, and some of the posters may be in a vulnerable place.

What this forum needs is some solid moderation, and a set of guidelines for posting; Fee and I are working on that. I have a meeting with Vidyamala Burch coming up soon, she wrote the book "Living Well With Pain and Illness," and she set up the Breathworks mindfulness institute in Manchester. They train mindfulness teachers there amongst other things, so I have really high hopes that she can help us with the moderation issue in this forum. Google her interview with Iain McNay, she's a very inspirational lady actually, especially for somebody disabled such as I.

i think that's a really good and sound idea.
i've come from depression and anxiety and my co volunteer is doing a lot of work on living with chronic pain.
although we've both done the mbct teacher training course and our mentor teaches the teachers and our base in east lancs is a mindfulness teacher training base, i've tried to stay with personal experience, hope it's working !!
i don't think anyone would want to give any harmful advice, not based on what i've read so far.
this is a brilliant site, but getting advice from a professional can only help improve it.

When posting, it's easy to forget that somebody else may just read that post in isolation, rather than familiarise themselves with the forum as a whole.
Occasionally, when I've posted advice or recommendations, I've been mindful enough to point out that I'm not an expert and that it would be advisable to speak to a trained practitioner. But, obviously, it's not possible to do that every time. Apart from anything else, it would quickly become repetitive.
I'm not sure what the answer is. Apart from reminding ourselves to be mindful when posting advice and perhaps remembering to point out to members, especially those new to the group, that we're meditators but we don't pretend to be trained experts.
Or maybe a message to that effect could be placed somewhere prominent on the site so that newcomers understand that they are not communicating with fully-trained professionals.
