Sounds and Thoughts Meditation and Tinnitus

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

Hello,
Whilst doing the Sounds and Thoughts meditation, often a tinnitus type buzzing arises during the time I bring my attention to sounds.
Does anyone else have the same experience?

Hi Stuffs, I have tinnitus in my left ear anyway, have done for a while now and it doesn't bother me these days. When I do sound meditation I often focus on it and I really notice the different pitches and level of noise fluctuating, and in fact, I can really hear it now since you reminded me :-)

I read something a long time back before I started practicing from a guy who really felt mindfulness had changed his life after suffering quite badly with tinnitus.

Hi Stuffs,
Worth bearing in mind that, when we start meditating, we start noticing all kinds of things that we might previously have been oblivious to.
Does that make any sense?

I have quite loud Tinnitus and meditation has certainly made me notice it a lot more. I think it is quite common for people practising mindfulness to pick up on it and I believe mindfulness has helped me deal with it to a greater extent than before.

The agony of fighting against Tinnitus and not accepting it must be awful, a never-ending battle.

I used to know a hospital "Pain" Consultant many years ago and he told me when there is no medical or physical relief from chronic pain, their last resort is what would be considered mindfulness, accepting it and allowing it in order to increase pain tolerance.

Dear Dave, Jon and mybubble,
Thank you for your replies.
I only experience the tinnitus when I bring my attention to sounds. I wonder if it's the onset and whether doing the sounds meditation will encourage it to come out.
That said I feel, with the support of your replies, that the wise thing is to work on accepting it. If it is indeed the onset, the meditation will enable me to explore it while it's still early.

I wouldn't worry about it being the onset stuffs, it may well have been there years ago if you had started meditating then.

Sometimes I can hear noises in my right ear if I pay enough attention and sometimes not. If it takes your attention while practicing just listen to it and before you know it you'll soon start concentrating on other noises.
