Mindfulness and acute stress response

Post here if you have been practising for a while, and you are starting to get your head around what this is all about. Also post here if you are a long-term practitioner with something to say about the practice.

Walking thru the woods again, quite late in the evening and quite dark, and a wood pigeon suddenly flew out of a bush right next to me and scared the hell out of me :-).

It got me thinking about how mindfulness can play a part in managing the fight or flight response. I know it can help when this response becomes a slow burner due to worrying about things happening in a few days, weeks etc, but could it be useful when there is a direct threat slap bang if front of you? (and i don't mean a wood pigeon btw).

Would be great to hear any thoughts on this? Are there are any police, military, fire services on the forum? As I guess its people doing these kind of jobs who may experience the acute stress response more than most of us.

Thanks Dave.
