breathing to induce relaxation

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

If im having an episode on anxiety before i start mindfull meditation, should i breathe deeply and slowly to induce rellaxation to reduce my anxiety in that moment or just continue to breath normally but be aware of my anxiety that im feeling, just simply observing the (horrible) emotion

For me, i would normally try deep slow breathing when anxious to calm myself down and then i would start mindfull meditation without altering my breath

My question i guess is this: When mindfull meditating, should i alter my breathing to induce a relaxation response or do nothing and just observe my breath how it is in that moment and stay with the anxiey? Any though welcomed :-)
