Hi
I'd like to ask what people think of reading self help books. I am aware that there are some areas I'd like to improve on and am wondering what people's views are on this.
I purchased feel the fear and beyond today in second hand shop and parts really resonate.
Just a thought.

Hey Jenna
I recommend you work with what's working. If they are working for you, work with them.
Myself, I think maybe I wasn't self-help-able. I was beyond self-help. I needed something different. Just raw mindfulness and life events that brought things up.
Each person's way is different. We've developed differently, we've had different types of experiences and we've reacted to them differently. We need different things that will deal with our unique egos.
I initially tried to tell some of my friends who were struggling "just do things like this..." and it was the way that worked for me, and it just didn't click with them. Maybe they needed that instruction later, maybe that method would just never work for them.
I'm OK with it.
So, like I said, work with what's working. If you see progress, and after a couple months can look back and see that it stuck, keep going.

I've read quite a few 'self-help' books. I enjoy reading and enjoy learning new things and its helpful to learn about different things that might be beneficial to you. I've found it a good way to learn about things I wouldn't have normally have given much credence to - its good to have an open mind (but also try to sort the wheat from the chaff and realise that not everything is going to suit you). I've found reading positive, encouraging books is also a good way to counteract all the negativity around you or the negative people in your life.
I think its possible to read too much if all you do is learn about something but never try it out or put it into practice. Mindfulness is the perfect example of this. I still find it helpful to read books on mindfulness but its something that has to be practised not just read about.
all the best
