Compassion For My Spouse

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

I have perused your forums and am glad to see such a warm community. I'm returning once again to mindful practice and am trying to take steps to make it stick as a habit I enjoy and grow from.

The driving factor behind my desire to become more mindful is to be there for my spouse 100%. She has gotten frustrated when my focus on myself has made me oblivious to her needs. She is currently pregnant with our second child and so her stress is rightfully heightened.

Any advice you have on focusing my practice towards this goal is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi GTJones,
A regular mindfulness practice should bring compassion.
How's your practice shaping up currently?
All best,
Jon

It feels "patchy", when I'm fresh off meditating I'm fully in the moment and open but later in the evening I've reverted to a mindset that can prove selfish. I suppose the effects take time? Perhaps I'm being impatient.

Thank you Jon.

My pleasure.
A good structure is always recommended if you are looking to ground yourself in practice.
How are you learning, if you don't mind me asking. With a teacher? Via a book? Other?
Cheers,
Jon

Compassion meditation might be superbly suited for your need. Also called loving kindness or metta meditation in more Buddhist surroundings. I do it quite a lot and it is very powerful though you need to do it consistently.

Best of luck!
