Mindfulness and illness

Post here if you are just starting out with your mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is a really difficult concept to get your head around at first, and it might be that you would benefit from some help from others.

Hey everyone!

I just caught flew and I find it very hard to keep it up with my formal and informal meditation practise.

During breathing meditation (and also often in body scan) I find it almost impossible to focus on the object. My mind is suck very hard into thinking making detachment very difficult.

Do you think that it is wiser to take a break of meditation for the time I am sick, as it feels more of a struggle and very energy draining than usually?

Also I've read online that mindfulness is a good way to come to terms with your illness, freeing energy which may reinforce the healing process.
I'd like to tap into this, any suggestions?

Thank you!:)

I'm certainly no expert, but I've always found looking back that the best times to meditate are the ones where I don't particularly feel like doing it. There are ways that the practice can be varied if you are struggling physically.

I agree with Gareth.
If I'm feeling under the weather I take it as a challenge to do at least a little practice. Last time I was down with flu I did a 15-minute body scan each day and found it a wonderful way to be in touch with my ailing body. After each body scan I treated myself to a wee dram of scotch which warmed me up very nicely.

I agree. Sometimes I don't feel like practicing meditation either, but after doing it, I realise it's on those days when I need it the most. Practicing will surely help you, whether you're ill or not. Maybe you're not physically able to meditate the same way you usually do, but I'm sure you'll figure it out :)

Maybe you need to do it shorter, or find a different way... but don't let illness stop you ;)
Breath, smile, and go slowly.
