Re: Mindfulness and smoking

"So, maybe we could resolve the argument by redefining the behaviour - rather than stupid, calling it damaging. This is non-judgemental and factual. Do you think that would help our debate? To a smoker it is far from stupid to smoke a cigarette, but none would argue that it isn't harmful."...

Re: Mindfulness and smoking

To my mind, there is an important difference between being mindful of the urge to smoke and "being mindful of one's stupidity". The latter involves self-judgment. There's no getting around that. Hi Jon, I will quote how Eckhart Tolle describes humans : "Humans are intelligent, but if...

Re: What Are Your Favourite Mindfulness Resources?

Great list of resources there. I would like to add one more, one of the most important books I have ever read. Book is called "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius, roman emperor who lived around year 180 AD. It is not about meditation at all. It is a personal reminder of a brilliant mind about...

Re: Mindfulness and smoking

i can see your point . but self criticism by needlessly telling yourself you're stupid is a non starter for me. it doesn't fit in with self compassion. I must tell you that criticism perfectly fits with self compassion. Criticism is not against self compassion. Try to contemplate on this and you wi...

Re: Mindfulness and smoking

Hi all, I am a former smoker. 29 of October 2010 is my another birthday, the day I stopped smoking after full 24 years. I did not discover mindfulness at that time so I can not say anything about my experience with smoking and mindfulness. I can do two things: 1. Recommend a book "The Easy Way ...

Re: JOT Week 24 - Enjoy humility

What do I learn from this? Maybe that its best to focus on what I am able to control - my outlook, my attitude, how I regard myself etc and not worry or stress about the actions of others over whom I have no control. Happiness and contentment is found within not without. Your understanding is corre...

Re: JOT Week 24 - Enjoy humility

There are a couple of thoughts I have about this. Before I start here is the definition of humble I just picked up from Google "having or showing a modest or low estimate of one's importance." The problem is that there is also a verb humble which means "cause (someone) to feel less im...

How I Discovered Mindfulness

I wrote a blog post about my experience when I just started with mindfulness meditation, and I have listed some resources for beginners. They are mostly YouTube videos, and some books, too. In this post you will find materials by guys like Jon Kabat-Zinn, Eckhart Tolle and Andy Puddicombe. http://mi...

Re: Is there any point to this practice?

This is quite normal, and I would recommend that you just continue doing what you are doing already.

Headspace app mentioned by scratchet can be useful, and also other programs like Buddhify and Calm. They are helpers, but are not essential to your practice.

best regards
