Don't Think the Breath
"Don't think the breath, be aware of it." I have to remind myself of this often during meditation. It's so easy and so "invisible" for thought to get in between the breath (or whatever the object of attention is) so that we end up with a sometimes very, very thin but very, very r...

True Refuge
True Refuge: Finding Peace & Freedom in Your Own Awakened Heart is a great book. It's by Tara Brach, who's a well-respected and well-known teacher here in the States. She's the founder and director of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, DC. What I really like about Tara's teachings,...

Re: What Is Your Motivation?
Interesting question. I'm an adoptee, and my adoptive parents -- who are my parents, as they raised me, loved me, and have supported me through thick and thin since I was 2 weeks old -- did a reasonably good job (rather, they did an excellent job; I still turned out with a few imperfections, however...

I forget that a lot -- and observer &qu...

Re: Negative effects of meditation
There are many paths to becoming more conscious, meditation being just one of them. Sufis whirl. Maybe being aware of Nature each day is your thing. And it's so true that "meditation" covers a very broad spectrum of practices, even within Buddhism itself.

Re: Week 8 or The Rest of Your Life
Many ways to keep mindfulness going. Sound is an interesting one to me, precisely because it's not my primary way of coming back to the moment. As has been said, whatever works!

Week 8 or The Rest of Your Life
So what have folks been doing as their longterm practice(s) of choice after the course? Is anyone following up with choiceless awareness, something mentioned only briefly in the Mindful Way Through Depression book. It's a practice which I've been interested in, and have tried from time to time. Chee...
