Bodily sensations

Can somebody shed some lights on why it is important to be aware of bodily sensations when it comes to practicing mindfulness? i.e. how does being aware of bodily sensations (which accompany the difficult feelings/emotions) help us deal with difficult feelings/emotions?

thanks Jon for your response. I think you have answered my question really well. As I practice mindfulness more, i will naturally become more responsive. It's not a process that i can "manufacture" but it's a process that comes naturally as i practice mindfulness more and more. Will check ...
